If you have followed my posts thus far, I am sure by now that you have realized that I have begun to emphasize the importance of self-care in our daily routines. It is indeed necessary.
However, as mamas, our greatest obstacle when faced with our self-care needs is that we simply do not have the time. The truth is that in the midst of all of the meal prepping – carpooling – drop offs – pickups – sports events – playdates – temper tantrums – homework helping – bath time craziness, there just isn’t enough me time.
Although most of us actually intend to practice self-care, it often becomes ones of those things that ends up last on our to-do lists.
How could we possibly find time to implement self-care activities into our already hectic lives? Self-care apps are a great way to make it easy and fun to implement self-care activities into your daily life, ultimately leading to the ability to take better care of ourselves.
Personally, I have mixed emotions when it comes to the evolving era of technology. Admittedly so, I am also not the biggest fan of social media.
The simple truth is that virtual life has easily proven to be both a blessing and a curse.
All things considered; it is important to know that there are many popular self-care apps, as well as mental health apps available that we can utilize as a simple way to implement self-care.
Self-care does not have to require much time at all, so don’t stress over the need to make huge time commitments – it simply isn’t necessary. Even if you can only find a few moments to do so, you will be glad that you reserved a little bit of time for yourself. Realizing the need for self-care is the first step.
The following list is compiled of some of the best apps to improve your physical health, emotional health, and mental health in 2022. This list includes a variety of free apps, as well as apps that may include a free trial with in-app purchases. Most of these self-care apps are compatible with iPhone and android devices.
Why is it Important to Practice Self-Care?
Personally, the most notable benefit of practicing self-care is its’ impact on our mental health.
When it comes to our mental well-being, the benefits of caring for ourselves are often overlooked.
As a busy mama of 3, who struggles with mental health (OCD, anxiety, depression), taking care of myself is a priority that I have mistakenly knocked to the bottom of my to-do lists for far too long.
Creating a healthy relationship with ourselves is an important part of building and strengthening our resilience – ultimately, helping us to overcome stress, as well as, that inevitable burnout that we associate with motherhood.
Not to mention, it has been proven that implementing self-care practices into your daily routine can reduce anxiety and depression, relieve stress, improve focus, minimize frustration and anger, promote a better sleep cycle, and increase energy levels along with its’ many other notable benefits.
The problem with not taking the time for self-care is that it eventually leads to significant consequences in our day-to-day lives. If we do not take proper care of ourselves, we not only hurt the relationship that we have with ourselves, but we risk harming our relationships with others as well.
Essentially you are burning the candle on both ends – eventually it will burn out.
Taking the time to engage in your self-care can be helpful in relieving the pressures of everyday life.
I will continue to stress these three things regarding self-care:
1. Self-care is necessary.
2. Self-care is not selfish.
3. You deserve it.
I hope that you find one or more of these self-care apps to be beneficial to you on your own self-care journeys.
Remember, you are not alone mamas!

There are a variety of features offered within the Calm app; these include a 10-minute Daily Calm, sleep stories narrated by well-known voices, an extensive music library, short videos focusing on mindful movements and gentle exercises, relaxing soundscapes and nature sounds for use with meditation or help with sleep, sleep check-ins and daily check-ins, as well as, breathing exercises focused on relaxation.

Take a deep breath, you got this.
The truth is, up until recently I didn’t say affirmations as often as I probably should – or at all for that matter.
I have spent the past few months expanding my horizons and experimenting with different sites and apps targeted toward improving my mental health and overall wellbeing.
There is one popular app that has unquestionably served its purpose and that is the I Am app.
The I Am app is a health and fitness app that sends local push notifications in the form of positive messages and inspirational quotes with the goal of promoting positive emotions, as well as positive thinking.
The I Am app includes a functionality that enables you to choose what topics you would like your affirmations to reflect. You also have the ability to set how many times during the day you would like to receive your affirmation notifications. The affirmations then simply pop up on your phone screen throughout your day.
Think about it mamas, how many imploding and intrusive negative thoughts cross your mind each day?
If you are anything like me – the answer is too many.
Affirmations are powerful statements that essentially have the power to strengthen the connection between our unconscious and conscious minds.
Positive affirmations can help to rewire our brains, as well as promote self-esteem and change our negative thought patterns.
So, whatever your intentions may be, empower yourself through positive affirmations – they may be just what you need to get through a difficult day.
Among this list of self-care apps, I would personally recommend the I Am app.
The Happify app encourages you to connect with your thoughts and emotions; it does so through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) skills, as well as positive reinforced psychology.
Apps in this category are great ways to create good habits, provide stress relief, get rid of negative thoughts, etc. The app that I feel does this the best is Happify.
It helps with all of those mentioned above, and it’s fun. You play games, learn new ways to cope with negative thoughts, and other activities that will get you on your way to feeling, well, happy.
The Happify app reminds you that how you feel matters.
Maybe you are feeling sad, anxious, or just completely overwhelmed and stressed out. The Happify app provides you with effective tools and programs to enable you to take control of your feelings and thoughts, ultimately allowing you to break old patterns, and form new healthier habits.

The Gratitude app is a health and fitness app that focuses on promoting self-care through gratitude.
“Happiness is with you. It starts with Gratitude.”
The Gratitude app provides a guided gratitude journal, positive affirmations, a vision board to manifest your goals, as well as daily zen motivation quotes.

If you are someone who enjoys giving back, maybe you are already raising money for a charity you believe in – Charity Miles will allow you to raise even more.
Charity Miles is a great way to make an impact. You don’t have to be an avid marathon goer or make a commitment to attend your charity’s next walking event – it is a new and innovative way to raise money.
By simply sharing your Charity Miles on social media, your friends and family have the opportunity to find your Pledge Page and support your charity directly; it essentially does all of the fundraising for you.
So mamas, are you interested in raising money while you walk? Instead of using a fitness tracker app, consider using the Charity Miles app and turn your miles into money for charity.

Colorfy is a digital coloring app that allows you to create masterpieces from your phone. There is no need to make a trip to the local art supply store when you find yourself in need of a creative moment.
Art has been proven to be very therapeutic. Truth be told, art is often my escape when I find myself feeling overwhelmed or anxious – which is often.
Admittedly, I usually resort to crafting with my kids – but when I am caught up in the day-to-day and on the move the Colorfy app is easily accessible and allows me to run wild with my creativity.
The Colorfy app features over 1000+ pictures to paint; mandalas, florals, animals, patterns, cats, gardens, famous paintings and more that are easy to color. Get creative mamas!
The Woebot app is a health and fitness app that serves as your own personal coach.
In just a few minutes a day, Woebot can help you maneuver through some of life’s ups and downs.
Woebot is a useful tool that enables you to:
- Think through situations with step-by-step guidance using proven therapeutic frameworks like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Master skills to reduce stress and live happier through a wide variety of evidence-based stories
- Help inform research used to develop new mental health resources and treatments
Based on tried and tested approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Woebot checks in with you every day and guides you through practical techniques.
The truth is mamas, therapy can be not only time-consuming but expensive. Even more so, many people do not have access to these services – making mental health more difficult to maintain.
Although it may be hard to believe that a chatbot could help promote your mental health – Woebot does just that.
Woebot has also been proven to help its users with everyday stress and anxiety, as well as symptoms of depression, relationship problems, procrastination, loneliness, grief, addiction, and pain management.
I have personally tried several similar apps and have found Woebot to my favorite. You simply check in with the chatbot daily and depending on the context of your conversation, you receive activities, advice, and more.
I would not say that this type of app can replace therapy, but for a free self-care app, it is a great way to start.
